A Review of DOP’s 2010

As the year draws to an end, I would like to reflect on the year DOP had.  2009 was full of optimism, creativity and hope—2010 was all business and reality.  Creatively, we did not produce as much as we should have, however, we did see an increase in income which lead to the purchase of some much needed equipment and software.

I’ve been struggling for sometime now trying to figure out where we are going.  I know that we need to have a steady cash flow to help support our needs.  That is why our own projects have taken a backseat to finding more clients to do videography work for.  So yes, 2010 was all business.

But for 2011?  Who knows.  I’ve been cooking up this idea for awhile now to to our own web series starting next year.  Nothing big, maybe 5 10-15 minute episodes.  My idea was inspired by “Entourage” which focuses on the life of a Hollywood movie star and his crew.  I was thinking of doing something similar that tells the story of Delta Omega Productions, aka a story about me and my crew.  Obviously some of the material will be exaggerated but overall it will convey the difficulties of running a production company in western PA, far from the west coast.

My goal for this series is to create enjoyable material as well as shamelessly self-promote DOP.  Oh and it can’t cost us too much either.

The difficulty in this project is trying to keep everyone focused and on the same page.  I still haven’t pitched the idea yet to the crew…so I will keep you posted.

As for the title of the series, I was thinking “The Dailies.”  So, I wish everyone a happy and safe hollidays and cheers to a good 2011!

Although I do have to agree with most of the list, some of the rankings perplex me (Forest Gump 75 out of 82?)

“The Wedding” Project Overview

I typically like to write about my experience right after I complete a film, and although “The Wedding” is more of an “Original DOP Short” as we like to call it, I’m still going to recount my experience.

I can’t tell you exactly how I came up with the idea for “Wedding” but I can tell you I wrote it in my Statics class fall semester of my sophomore year.  I remember coming to class with the idea so when I sat down for lecture, I tuned out the professor and wrote it quickly with Word.

After Delta Omega Productions finally lands an important wedding job, things go terribly wrong as someone makes a grave mistake that might mean the end of DOP….

So I’ve decided to download the free trial of Sony Movie Studio and edit “The Wedding” on it.  The main reason for this is because SMS has 10 video tracks which is soooo helpful with the all of the dialogue.  We shot about 70 minutes worth of footage for a 7 page script—I’ve got my hands full now!

Creativity Boom

So it finally happened.  For long long I’ve wanted an idea, any kind of creative idea, to just…POP into my head.  Well yesterday that happened!

So I’m at work and BAM this amazing creative idea hits me in the face.  I whip out my lap top and begin writing and writing and writing.  I finally finish (my work day gone in a flash) and I’m left with a short script that I know I can use to help me market another idea I’ve been working on.

I think I’m finally starting to listen to my creative side—which is good, really good.

Peace!

Pre-Production: “The Wedding: A Delta Omega Productions Original Short”

For the first time this summer the whole gang will be getting together this weekend to finally shoot a short (see title above).  I am really excited about it and think it will turn out great.  This will be our 4th short in less than a years time…not too bad.

I’ll keep everyone posted on how it went.
